Strategic Plan ND guides businesses into the future

When Jim Boyd retired in 2006 after 31 years with UTC Aerospace Systems, he didn''t really have a plan for what he would do with all his free time.

What he did have was a lot of experience in business development and strategic planning. He is putting that knowledge back to work in his new business, Strategic Plan ND, L.L.C. The business is located in the Jamestown Business Center, Suite 135, 300 Second Ave. NE.

Boyd said soon after he retired he was asked by Jamestown College officials to be a substitute teacher for a strategic management class.

"I found I really enjoyed it, using my business and planning knowledge," he said.

Boyd said he was asked to serve on the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. as well as the strategic planning committee for St. James Basilica, and join the Jamestown Regional Airport Authority. All three organizations asked Boyd to lead their strategic planning efforts.

"As I was doing all this stuff I thought ''Hey, maybe there''s a need for this stuff in our community,''" he said.

Strategic planning is a process where a business develops vision and mission statements about what kind of business it wants to be. Then using those statements, a long-range strategic plan is developed. Within that plan are about five or six strategic goals.

Boyd said his role in this process is as a facilitator.

"The strategic planning process is all about creative thinking and getting outside of the day-to-day operations of the business or organization," he said.

When a client comes to Boyd, the first thing he does is ask him who the key people are in the business that the client wants involved in this process. Boyd said it''s usually four to 10 people depending on the size of the business.

"What I want are people who are creative thinkers, not necessarily management folks, people able to get outside of the operations side of the business," he said.

If the client doesn''t already have vision and mission statements, Boyd helps create the documents. Using those statements, he helps the client create five to 10 strategic projects, then has the client''s planning team prioritize those projects.

When the process is done, the client owns all of the strategic plan documents.

"I help them establish the plan and set their goals, it''s up to them to implement those goals," Boyd said.
